Simmered Shrimp (Ebi no Umani) for Osechi Ryori

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Quail & Olive . Complimentary product was provided for this post and this page may contain affiliate links. However, all opinions expressed here are my own.   Simmered Shrimp (Ebi no Umani) えびのうま煮 represents longevity and added a beautiful golden pink color to our Osechi Ryori. And I loved the reason that it is purported to signify long life. D read to us that the shrimp is both mustached and hunchbacked...like old wise men who also have long beards and a bent back. Okay, I can see that. And while the original version calls for mirin, which is a Japanese sweet-savory rice cooking wine, I like using the  Winter Ambrosia Vinegar   from The Quail & Olive.* First, I'm a huge proponent of using what you have in your kitchen; but, second, I find the vinegar has similar sweet and savory qualities since it's made with organic apples and pears. It must be my favorite substitution for using in Asian ...

Hot Vanilla for Winter #WarmUpDrinks

Happy New Year and welcome to the third installment of the Winter Warm-Up Drink Series hosted by Ellen of  Family Around the Table ! For the next four Fridays, now, we'll be featuring winter drinks guaranteed to warm you right up! Stay Warm With These Sips Apple Spiced Tea by Jolene’s Recipe Journal Hot Tea Toddy by Our Good Life Hot Vanilla by Culinary Adventures with Camilla Mexican Coffee by Family Around the Table Mocha Hot Chocolate by Books n’ Cooks Small Batch Vanilla Cinnamon Cold Brew Latte by The Baking Fairy S’mores Latte by Cindy’s Recipes and Writings Tom and Jerry Cocktail by A Day in the Life on the Farm Hot Vanilla I am almost loathe to call this a recipe. But, when I talked to my boys about hot winter drinks, 'Hot Vanilla!' resounded around the dining table. "We love Hot Vanillas, Mom!" they hollered. I know. I know. When they were younger, we went to a breakfast spot and I always let them order - and share - one...

Milk-Braised Pork Tamales #KitchenMatrixCookingProject

Today is our second May post for our Kitchen Matrix Project, named after Mark Bittman's  Kitchen Matrix  cookbook. You can read about the year-long project:  here . This month, I chose the recipes and went with a Latin theme. So, last week, we made salsas. This week, we're working with masa. And so on...you get the idea. The #KitchenMatrixCookingProject Masa Creations An InLinkz Link-up This recipe isn't one of his, but I haven't made tamales in a long time and this is one of my family's favorites: tamales. I decided to make a variation of   maiale al latte  - Italian pork in milk - as the meat filling.  Pork braised in milk has s a delicate texture and flavor and the milk slowly evolves into a rich sauce of curds. Okay, it's not particularly photogenic, but it is delicious! Milk-Braised Pork Tamales Milk-Braised Pork 2 lbs skinless, boneless pork roast 1/2 C sliced onions 1/2 C chopped celery olive oil 2 C organic ...

Hedgerow Clams #FoodieReads

One of the most dangerous aspects of Amazon - for me anyway - is the "customers who bought this item also bought..." section. Their suggestions never fail to lure me into just one more book purchase! And that's how I ended up with Eating Vi ệ t Nam : Dispatches from a Blue Plastic Table by Graham Holliday* on my to-read pile. I wasn't familiar with Graham before reading this book, but I am now avidly following his blog noddlepie . You can also find him on Twitter and on Instagram .  In this entertaining memoir, Holliday takes you on a colorful, gastronomic tour between north and south Vi ệ t Nam. You almost feel your elbows getting sticky right alongside his. On the Page Best opening line of a book ever...and it set the stage for the tales of culinary adventure that awaited me in the book. "As the pig's uterus landed on the blue plastic table in front of me, I knew I'd made a mistake" (pg 1). Down the back alleys where vend...

Tuvalu: Steamed Fish and Suafa’i #CookingAroundtheWorldAdventure

I am already having a crazy week; it's Spring fund drive time. Enough said. But I get to be around these kids and their enthusiasm and love of their school is infectious. Still I am determined to stick to my schedule of traveling by tabletop to at least one country per week with our Cooking Around the World Adventure . So, here we go to Tuvalu. from ontheworldmap.com Some Facts... Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Its closest neighbors are Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa and Fiji. Comprised of three reef islands and six true atolls, Tuvalu has a total land are of less than 10 square miles! The small island of Nanumea played a significant role in the World War II when it served as the bomber base for the Allied Forces defending the Pacific basin. 'Tuvalu', the name, refers to the country’s eight traditionally inhabited islands though there are nine islands that make up the country. For ...
