The French Dispatch-Inspired Drinks Galore and Minced Lamb Bonbons in Pastry #MoviesandMunchies

The month is the second month of the new #MoviesandMunchies group. For February, Sue of Palatable Pastime asked us to watch The French Dispatch ; you can read her invitation here . I will start with this: I think you either love Wes Anderson movies, or you hate them. Back in August 2021, we were assigned Moonrise Kingdom  for #FoodNFlix and I went far Down the Wes Anderson Rabbit Hole . Actually, re-reading that post, maybe the reality is you either appreciate his movie-making style, or you don't.  A good friend of mine said she hated this movie. I actually quite enjoyed it. This is just one of the many reasons I love participating in our online movie and book groups; I am pushed to watch and read things that I may not have done otherwise. Besides, it's interesting to discuss with people who many not share your opinions. On the Screen image from imdb.com Like all his other movies, this one is odd, over-populated with characters, and visually distinctive. And, also, like his o...

Sea Urchins, Oysters, and Selkies #FoodieReads

While we were camping in the redwoods last weekend, I brought The Blue Salt Road by Joanne M Harris with me.*  And I read it while relaxing in my hammock one morning before we headed off to the archery range. Selkie stories aren't new to me; I remember reading them in both my Norse Mythology and my British Folklore classes in college. And, when the boys were little, The Song of the Sea*  movie was one of our favorites! photos from amazon.com Selkies are 'seal people' who are seals in the water but can come ashore, shed their seal skin and become human. Problems arise when someone steals their seal skin as that traps them in their human form on land. Harris built her story around retelling this premise and has created a novella full of curiosity, passion, young love, confusion, and betrayal. Flora, a redheaded island girl, summons a selkie from the Grey Seal clan to shore through her tears. Then she seduces him, gets pregnant, and steals his seal skin so that he can't l...

Miyagi Oysters with Cucumber Mignonette #FishFridayFoodies

It's time for Fish Friday Foodies' May event. We are a group of seafood-loving bloggers, rallied by Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm , to   share fish and seafood recipes on the third Friday of the month. This is, easily, my favorite recipe sharing event of the month. I always come away with a list of recipes that I just have to try! This month, I am  hosting. Here was my challenge to the group: " Let's go raw! Share your favorite ways to eat fish raw. Think poke, ceviche, tartare!" I had initially planned to make a raw Peruvian fish salad. But I received Miyagi oysters from our CSF, Real Good Fish  this week and decided that those were perfect for a raw event! The Miyagi oysters were fresh from Tomales Bay in Marin County just up the coast from us.  Miyagi oysters are also called Japanese oysters. These marvelous mollusks can each clean up to 50 gallons of water per day. Reefs also create habitats for hundreds of other sea creatures, such as m...

Oyster Stew with Shrimp and Sardines

This post is a little tardy as the oysters were part of our Real Good Fish CSF delivery last week. Inspired by the Miyagi oysters from Tomales Bay in Marin County, I wanted to create a simple stew . But, first, you have to shuck them. Click to read my post HOW TO: Shuck Oysters . Though this recipe feels luxurious, it's one you can easily pull off on a week night if you have the right ingredients. I added some fresh shrimp and sardines to the oysters to make a bigger pot though I didn't get to indulge because it has dairy and I'm still partially on my Whole30 Adventure . More on that soon because my month is almost up! Ingredients  serves 4 freshly shucked oysters in their liquid, about 4 to 5 per person 2 T butter 1 T olive oil 2 medium shallots, minced 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1/2 lb peeled shrimp 1 tin sardines freshly ground salt freshly ground pepper 4 C milk 1 C heavy cream hot sauce to taste, optional crackers fo...
