White Fish Flop #KitchenMatrixCookingProject

Here we are at the third August post for our year-long #KitchenMatrixCookingProject; you can read more about that project  here . Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm  selected our recipes this month and she is wrapping up the month with proteins - fish and chicken. This week, we're focusing on white fish. If you don't have a copy of Bittman's cookbook, you can see his white fish matrix online  here . I considered broiling fish with tomatoes and capers; or making fish curry with zucchini. The recipe that the boys wanted to try was the prosciutto-wrapped fish. But I didn't have prosciutto and decided to give it a go with bacon instead because I had been to the market too many times that day already. Big mistake. Here's what the others whipped up this week with their white fish... An InLinkz Link-up While I loved the  idea  of bacon-wrapped fish, I clearly need a do-over. I call 'mulligan!' Or maybe I should actually follow Bittman'...

Peaches and Cream Tart #5thAnnualPieathalon #EatPie

This is a new-to-me event: the 5th Annual Pieathalon which is hosted by Emily of Dinner is Served 1972 . And I'm looking forward to seeing how Kelli, of Kelli's Kitchen , did with my Chocolate Mousse Pie. She tagged me when she was baking, telling me: "It's only 1:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday and I'm a bit tipsy trying to follow a somewhat complicated recipe --- and it's YOUR fault!! Guess who got your pie recipe?!?!? Woo Hoo! :) I think this is going to be delicious!!" I'm glad she had a positive attitude about the adventure. Since I'm new to this whole Pieathalon thing, I'll share the rules with my readers.  1. Pick a pie recipe from a pre-1990 cookbook. 2. Email it to Emily. 3. She assigns it randomly to another pieathlete. 4. We bake. 5. We post. 6. We share. Before the fun and games started, I made a Foraged Huckleberry Pie just to get my pie-making brain into gear. The boys did not object. I sent off t...

Cinnamon Vanilla Popovers

These are not difficult, so I don't know why I don't make these more often! Maybe it's because I love the look of glee when these come to the table. All three of my boys love popovers. Jake asked, "How much butter do you use?" Not that much . "So, they're kinda healthy?" I guess so. I added some ground cinnamon and vanilla salt to this version. But you can use whatever spices and extracts you wish. This really is an incredibly flexible recipe to have in your Sunday brunch repertoire. Ingredients makes 6 popovers 1-1/2 C organic whole milk 1-1/2 C flour 1/2 t vanilla salt 3 eggs 1 t pure vanilla extract 1/2 t ground cinnamon 1 T butter, cut into 6 cubes Procedure Preheat oven to 400º F. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until bubbles form around the edge of the pan. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs. Temper the eggs so they don't scramble or curdle. Whisk constantly until the eggs and milk are completely c...

A Pretty Simple Approach, 10 Lessons, Summer Salsa & More #PrettySimpleCooking #PrettySimpleDinnerParty

Excerpted from A Couple Cooks | Pretty Simple Cooking: 100 Delicious Vegetarian Recipes to Make You Fall in Love with Real Food by Sonja Overhiser and Alex Overhiser. Copyright © 2018. Available from Da Capo Lifelong Books, an imprint of Perseus Books, LLC, a subsidiary of Hachette Book Group, Inc. Back in February, I hosted a Pretty Simple Dinner Party to celebrate the release of  the cookbook  A Couple Cooks - Pretty Simple Cooking: 100 Delicious Vegetarian Recipes to Make You Fall in Love with Real Food  by Sonja and Alex Overhiser.* When Sonja emailed that they were hosting a second event, I was in immediately. I emailed some friends and told them to come hungry. When I pulled the cookbook off the shelf, I started marking recipes I wanted to make for the #PrettySimpleDinnerParty v.2. Turns out that two of them I had already made - for the first dinner - including the Lemon & Pepper Green Beans and the Artichoke Lentil Stew with Salsa Verde. At least ...

Skip the Butterbombs and Pair Champagne with Alpine Cheeses Instead #Winophiles

This month the French Winophiles are opening and pairing Grower Champagne with Martin of  ENOFYLZ Wine Blog  at the lead. You can read his invitation here ...and his preview of the online gathering here . I'll readily admit: when I first saw the topic, my first thought was, "What the heck is Grower Champagne?!!?" You can read Martin's Q & A in the invitation linked above. But I was instantly intrigued and wondered just how many I could find in the month I had to prep. First, I had to learn HOW TO: Read a Champagne Label ...and look for those tell-tale letters. R and M. I didn't know it at the time that I bought the Louise Brison, but that bottle was a Grower Champagne. If you're reading this early enough, feel free to join us on Twitter at 8am (Pacific time) on Saturday, August 18th. You can follow along with the hashtag #Winophiles. And certainly take a look at what the other bloggers are contributing to the discussion. Jeff of FoodWin...

Ajo Blanco (Almond Garlic Soup) #SoupSaturday

Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm  kicked off this group: Soup Saturday Swappers. And, this month, Sneha is also hosting. She asked us to share our favorite soups made with almonds. She wrote: " Share a soup that contains almonds in any form. Almond flour, sliced almonds, roasted almonds, crushed almonds, almond milk. as there are so many options out there." I decided to whip up one of my favorite Spanish soups: Ajo Blanco . Traditionally it's made with bread, almonds, grapes, and cucumbers. The bread acts as a thickener. This version is made with bread, blanched almonds, almond butter, and green grapes. I skipped the cucumber altogether because I didn't have any. Also, next time, my vampire husband asked to cut the garlic. Nonsense! But, first, here are the other almond offerings... An InLinkz Link-up Ingredients  makes 4 servings 2 C bread, crusts removed and cubed 1-1/2 C vegetable stock 2 C seedless organic green grapes + m...

Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs #FishFridayFoodies

It's time for Fish Friday Foodies' August event. I don't remember why I missed July's event. Darn it. In any case, we are a group of seafood-loving bloggers, rallied by Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm , to   share fish and seafood recipes on the third Friday of the month. And this month, Wendy is also hosting as we share picnic fare that includes seafood . She wrote, "Share a recipe that is perfect for taking with you on a picnic. Think salads, sandwiches, spreads, dips, potluck side dishes." Before I get to my recipe. Here's the rest of the #FishFridayFoodies' picnic menu... An InLinkz Link-up Ingredients  serves 4 4 hardboiled eggs, peeled and halved* 2 T mayonnaise (here's  my homemade version ) 1 T diced smoked salmon + more for garnish 1 T capers freshly ground salt, to taste freshly ground pepper, to taste *I know a lot of people have their favorite method for hardboiling an egg.
