Brandy-Laced Chicken Liver Pâté with Balsamicy Onions #FoodieReads

Murder in the South of France by Susan Kiernan-Lewis* was the first in a series about character Maggie Newberry, an American who heads to France to identify the body of her sister who has purported died from a drug overdose. I blazed through this one in a couple of hours and jumped right in to the second book Murder à la Carte , actually preferring the second to the first. However, after reading these two, I think I'm done with the chick-lit mystery genre for awhile. On the Page image from amazon.com As I already mentioned Maggie heads to France to identify the body of her sister only to discover that she also has a niece about whom no one knew. Maggie makes some rather unbelievable choices and decisions, especially regarding Laurent. The Newberrys seems oddly detached from the death of their daughter Elise even though they end up taking custody of the granddaughter. And the authorities were written as uncaring and incompetent. I think the only thing that kept me ...

Undine's Spätzle

As part of my German wine pairing dinner, Undine made her Spätzle and showed me how.  These noodles are traditional in Germany, but especially in Baden-Württemberg which is in the southwestern part of the country and encompasses a cultural, historial, and linguistic region called Swabia. The origin of the word Spätzle comes from Swabian meaning 'little sparrows' from the pointed tip that resembles the beak of a bird. Grateful for generous friends who not only cook for me but share their recipes. Danke , Undine! Ingredients 1-1/2 C flour 2 eggs 3/4 C water (she uses a little less) couple pinches of salt freshly ground nutmeg 3 to 4 T butter parsley for serving Also needed: microplane and, if you can, a  Spätzle maker Procedure Place eggs in a bowl and beat until well-combined. Add in flour and grate fresh nutmeg over the top. I asked her how much; she responded, "You can never have enough nutmeg." Okay. Whisk to combine into a l...

Suquet de Pescados (Catalan Seafood Stew) #FishFridayFoodies

It's time for Fish Friday Foodies' September event. We are a group of seafood-loving bloggers, rallied by Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm , to   share fish and seafood recipes on the third Friday of the month.  This is, easily, my favorite recipe sharing event of the month. I always come away with a list of recipes that I just have to try! And this month, I am hosting. I urged my blogger friends: "Bring your favorite seafood stew to Fish Friday Foodies for our September event. Think Cioppino, Moqueca, or anything else that has CHUNKY seafood in a broth or sauce." The Other Stews An InLinkz Link-up Suquet de Pescados So, I ended up scheduling this for dinner on a day when I left work early. Not for fun. I was sick. My nose was running and I had a raging headache. I hate that first cold of the year. Ugh. I just wanted to sit on my bean bag with a mug of tea and watch a movie. But I had the ingredients calling to me and you just don't...

Tomato Salad with Parsley and Shallots #KitchenMatrixCookingProject

Here we are at the second August post for our year-long #KitchenMatrixCookingProject; you can read more about that project  here . Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm  selected our recipes this month and she has an amazing line-up for summer produce planned. This week, we're focusing on tomatoes. If you don't have a copy of Bittman's cookbook, you can see his white fish matrix online  here . I considered his Garlicky Pappa al Pomodoro and his Cold Cream of Tomato and Peach Soup, but those will have to wait for another day. First, here's what the others whipped up this week with their tomatoes... An InLinkz Link-up Ingredients 2 to 3 shallots, minced 1 t red wine vinegar ½ C olive oil fleur de sel freshly ground pepper 5 to 6 ripe heirloom tomatoes, sliced ½" thick fresh mint, roughly chopped fresh parsley, roughly chopped capers for garnish Procedure In a small mixing bowl, whisk together shallots, vinegar, and ol...

Rabbit Stew with Salt and Pepper Dumplings #FoodieReads

So, I guess someone who reads my kitchen blog strenuously objects to me sharing a rabbit recipe for Easter ( Braised Rabbit with Fennel and Salsa Verde ). I thought it was funny - and so did my boys. Besides, it was delicious. I didn't suggest she serve it and tell her kids it was the Easter Bunny.  But it did make me realize that I hadn't blogged some other rabbit recipes that we really, really enjoyed. So, here we go. This is from one of the Enthusiastic Kitchen Elf's favorite cookbooks: Heritage by Sean Brock.* On the Page Years ago, D became familiar with Brock through season two of  Mind of a Chef. Have I mentioned how much I love my kids' choice of things to stream on Netflix? So, for his birthday one year, I ordered him this cookbook. Brock's manifesto resonates with me and with everything I want my boys to embrace about cooking and eating. Cook with soul - but first, get to know your soul. Be proud of your roots, be proud of your home, be p...

Singapore Chili Crab #FishFridayFoodies

It's time for Fish Friday Foodies' March event. This month, P~ of  The Saucy Southerner  is hosting. She said:  Since we've never done a focus on a single fish, let's get crabby! Any and all things crab! Stuffed, cakes, soups, pasta, fried, dips, you name it!. We're All Crabby An InLinkz Link-up Singapore Chili Crab Years ago my friend Belle mentioned Singapore Chili Crab. Then, during our annual summer camping trip one year, I heard about it again from Jake's cousin who had honeymooned in Singapore and other places around Asia. A caveat: this is super messy to eat. So, don't wear anything white...and don't be embarrassed to lick your fingers. It...
