İyi ki doğdun! Turkish Meze, Ekşili Balık, and Donkey & Goat's 2021 Sparkling Grüner & Chard Pét-Nat #WinePW

Today the Wine Pairing Weekend writers are talking about Slow Wine. Gwendolyn of Wine Predator...Gwendolyn Alley is hosting; you can read her invitation . Last month, the Italian Food Wine Travel group looked at Italian Slow Wine. This month, we turn our eyes towards Slow Wine in the United States.  And, as a fantastic bonus, Gwendolyn arranged a Zoom meeting for us with the senior editor of the guide,  Pam Strayer. It was nice to see familiar names in the editorial masthead, including Nicole Ruiz Hudson of Somm's Table , I've known Nicole for years through our wine blogging groups, but I finally met her face to face in 2019 at a Prosecco Superiore lunch in San Francisco. And the presenter from that event is also one of the Slow Wine Guide editors - Iris Rowlee. The wine circles collide! But we are talking about Slow Wine... If you are reading this early enough, feel free to join our live chat on Twitter on Saturday, May 14th at 8am Pacific time. Follow the hashtag #WinePW an...

The Only You Round-Up + Oven-Roasted Black Bass #FoodNFlix

This month I am hosting the Food'N'Flix group and I invited them to watch Only You . You can read my invitation here . Here's what the bloggers shared... Pasta Debra of Eliot's Eats offered a Roman Pasta and Only You , sharing, "This was a new film for me, even though it would have been a film the girlfriends and I would have sought out in 1994.   I loved the vintage wedding photos during the opening.  That set up the plot well.   This is the October film so the Ouija board, candles  and fortune tellers help set a seasonal vibe." Her Bucatini all’Amatriciana looked amazing and was something that I made often when I lived in Rome.  Pizza Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm made White Clam Pizza . Her synopsis of the movie reminded me of how much travel has changed since 9-11: "What ensues is a fun escapade through airports, onto planes and into Italy.  You could tell that this film was definitely pre 9-11.  There were no security stops and...

Roasted Trout with Aji Dulce Peppers and Baby Potatoes + 2018 Bodegas Avancia Cuvée de O Godello #Galicia #WorldWineTravel

Last month the #WorldWineTravel bloggers took a virtual trip to Rías Baixas. You can read my post: Sopa de Cebolla + 2020 Fillaboa Albariño . But within Galicia are a total of five Denominacións de Orixe (DO): Monterrei, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, and Valdeorras. And I wanted to do a little deeper dive into some of the other DOs. In the Glass Valdeorras was named for the extensive gold mining that the Romans did in the area. Val-de-Oras is roughly 'valley of gold' in Latin and it is home to two of  Spain's indigenous grapes: Godello and Mencía. Bodegas Avancia lies in the mountains of Valdeorras which has predominantly slate soils. The estate is small - less than 25 acres - with the grapes being dry-farmed and cultivated organically.  Jorge Ordóñez specializes in working with the Godello grape which is native to northwest Spain. Though DNA profiling of the grape says it is genetically identical to the Portuguese  grape called Gouveio which grows througho...
