Tarte à la Tomate

I know that tomatoes had their chance and we're moving into hard squash season. But I still have tomatoes coming in from Jake and D's garden and a friend dropped off a box full recently. So I took the opportunity to make a tomato tart for dinner and want to share it with you in case you still have tomatoes available. This is based on a traditional French tart whose crust is smeared with mustard and topped with sardines. But I was the only one in the mood for sardines, so I'm not including it today. You can still see my slice - with the sardine! - at the end. Oh, a traditional tart would have a butter crust; I decided to make one with olive oil. Ingredients makes one 9-inch tart Olive Oil Crust 50 grams organic granulated sugar 1 large egg + 1 egg yolks 800 grams oil (I used olive oil) zest of 1 organic lemon, approximately 1 teaspoon 280 grams flour (I used all-purpose flour) pinch of salt 1 teaspoon baking powder Also needed: 9" tart pan with removable bottom, parc...

Pour un Pique-Nique Sur le Patio: Roasted Citrus Tart + Jacquart Brut Mosaique #Winophiles

For June's French Winophiles event, Gwendolyn of  Wine Predator  is hosting. She asked us to take a look at unexpected Champagne pleasures. You can read her invitation  here . Think red wine from the region of still wines instead of sparkling, she suggested. I was definitely excited to explore, but with the shelter-in-place orders, and ordering most of my wines online, I wasn't able to source anything particularly unexpected. Boo. I almost bowed out, but then Gwendolyn opened the theme up a little bit further to include biodynamic, organic, Brut Nature (low or no added dosage), a grower-maker wine, a wine made by one of the women of Champagne, or anything else that tickled our fancy. Okay...back in! And if you are reading this early enough, feel free to join us on a live Twitter chat on Saturday, June 20th at 8am Pacific time. You can follow along by searching for the hashtag #Winophiles. And, if you want to chime in, be sure to add that same hashtag to your tweet ...

Frangipane Tart with Pixie Tangerines #FoodNFlix

I have never seen  Midnight in Paris , despite it being nearly a decade old. So when Debra of  Eliot's Eats  picked it as May's  Food'N'Flix  movie, I set out to find it. You can read her announcement: here . I was able to find it and stream it on Amazon.* So, one evening, we settled in to watch this star-studded affair. A few minutes in, Jake says that he's watched it before and I hadn't been interested then. "But it wasn't an assignment back then," I protested. Thankfully, he relented and watched it with me again! On the Screen image from amazon.com At the risk of sounding uncultured and anti-artsy-fartsy films, I’m not a fan of Woody Allen movies. His movies always seem to have this melancholy, self-centered feel. This one was less so and I definitely enjoyed it. I won't give away too much of the film, but Gil (played by Owen Wilson) and his fiancée, Inez (played by Rachel McAdams), are in Paris piggy-backing on her parents...

Lemon Meringue Tart #PiDay

When I was brainstorming about what to serve at Jenn's Pi Day birthday party, I was looking for an array of pies to make and asked my hive mind for their favorites. Friends from all around the world gave me suggestions: "Apple is, in fact, my favourite. But Mincemeat is a close second." - Kevin in Germany "My favorite pie is the kind I’m eating." - Deb in Alaska  "Strawberry, Blueberry, Derby Pie (warm pecan with chocolate chips!), Coconut Cream, Lemon Ice Box, sure I can think of more. Can't pick just one!!!" - Anna in California Julie in Texas sent me her family recipe for Shoo Fly Pie. Caiti from Washington, DC, echoed her mom's Shoo Fly Pie, but added St rawberry-Rhubarb as well. "Buttermilk Chess Pie" - Marlene from California "Key Lime!" - Laurel in Florida "French Silk" - Charity in Idaho "All pies, really." - Laura in California And a second vote for Strawberry-Rhubarb and one ...
