Talking Sustainability: L'Ecole's 2018 Estate Seven Hills Vineyard Syrah, Falconery, and Soft Tacos #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of L'Ecole .  Complimentary wine was provided for this post and this page may contain affiliate links.  However, all opinions expressed here are my own.   If you're been following my blog, you'll know that I'm doing a series of monthly posts in collaboration with  L'Ecole Winery .* A group of us participate in a virtual tasting with their marketing manager, the winemaker, and the general manager and discuss timely topics. This month, we were talking about sustainability; it is Earth Month, after all, with tomorrow - April 22nd - being designated as Earth Day! It's also Walla Walla Wine Month. So, we raised our glasses with L'Ecole's 2018 Estate Seven Hills Vineyard Syrah. Some months I hope to share more than one pairing with one being posted on my  Culinary Cam YouTube  channel, such as the Savory Goat Cheese Truffles + L'Ecole's 2019 Sémillon video:  here .  I kicked off  this ser...

Celebrating Earth Day with Edible Monterey Bay

When I ran into Sarah, from Edible Monterey Bay , at the inaugural Independent Marketplace earlier this month, she told me about the next supper club. All I needed to hear was: Earth Day. Farm Tour. And organic Asian Street Food. After the amazing first pop-up supper club at Lokal last month, I didn't hesitate to (1) put it on our calendar, (2) line up a babysitter, and (3) rope in some good friends to join the culinary adventure. Sarah did ask that I not blog about the event until it hit their website; that was tough, but I did it. As soon as it hit their blog , it hit mine . On a farm. In the dirt. Followed by street food. Oh, yes! Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day. It was. We met up with everyone at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems' Farm & Garden where Liz Milazzo, the Field Production Manager, led us on a walking tour of the 25-acre farm that employs organic production methods and serves as research, teaching,...

A Sustainable Silver Tide

Riley and I were just working on his history report about Monterey County; he opted to write about the sardine industry, when Cannery Row was literally a row of canneries, and about the purse-seiner the Geraldine-Ann. When he came across the term 'the silver tide', he didn't understand what it meant. So, I decided to open up a can of sardines for dinner. He looked at the glistening skin and said, "Oh, Mommy, I get it. There were so many sardines in the water that they looked like a silver wave." Exactly right. Sardines, according to the Seafood Watch put out by the Monterey Bay Aquarium , are now "abundant and healthy" and are labeled: Best Choice. Great. The boys love them. I served these over cooked barley with a turnip sunomo over fresh spinach. And we talked about how the sardines were overfished before and how they are being managed better these days.
