Sarma (Serbian Cabbage Rolls) + The Other Einstein #FoodieReads

Okay, so this isn't really a foodie book, however it does have a lot of delicious food inspiration. And it's a wonderful albeit slightly depressing book. The Other Einstein  by Marie Benedict* weaves the story of Albert Einstein's first wife into a compelling historical fiction. On the Page I can honestly say that I knew nothing about Albert Einstein's private life. I doubt I even knew he was married. Once, much less twice. The premise of this book is that Mileva Marić, Einstein's first wife, is actually responsible for discovering and articulating the Theory of Relativity among others of his theories. And though Marie Benedict bases her novel on extensive biographical research, she admits that her narrative is largely speculative. Mileva's actual role is unknown and, certainly, undocumented. Certain scientists and scholars assert that she was, at minimum, a sounding board off of which Einstein tested his theories; some believe that it was, in fac...

Recipe Testing: (Untraditional) Zasmażana Kapusta

Every now and then I come across a photo of a dish with - maybe - nothing other than the name or a few scribbled words. Oddly, I used to clip food photos out of magazine without the recipe. Why?!?! I have no idea. That was the case with this dish. I did, however, write down: "sausages, sauerkraut, apples, potatoes." So, I set about trying to create  Zasmażana Kapusta without the slightest idea of how it was made. Okay, I could probably have Google'd it and come up with some instructions. But, heck, the challenge is the adventure part, right?! I will say that after I made it, I posted a photo and asked if I knew anyone who had actually had the dish. Turns out my version didn't use the correct sausages (I used uncured bratwurst), I should have sliced the sausages, and many people didn't agree with the potatoes on the top. So, I will be re-doing this recipe with some of those changes in mind. My family actually liked the potatoes on top, and the photo I had ...

Feasting for Sankt Nikolaus Tag: German Sips, Schweineschnitzel, Spätzle, and Sauerkraut #WinePW #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me in conjunction with the December #WinePW event. Wine samples were provided for this post and this page may contain affiliate links. This month Nancy from Pull That Cork is hosting the #WinePW group with a German wine experience. Here's her invitation . I'll be honest: I can count the number of times I've had German wine on one hand though I remember hearing the words  Spätlese and Auslese when we lived in the Netherlands and my parents would drink wine with their friends. So, this event was a great opportunity to explore, research, and learn more about the wines of Germany. I'm very grateful to the event sponsor - Winesellers, Ltd. - who provided a generous sampling for several bloggers to open, taste, and pair.* I received eight bottles of wine. I shared five at a dinner party and will write about the remaining wines separately. I was intrigued by the Schäfer Organic Dry Rosé 2017 - from Rheinhessen, German...

Simple Sauerkraut

When I received a shipment of German wines for an upcoming post for Wine Pairing Weekend, last month, I immediately asked friends who have lived in Germany and are of German descent if they would teach me some recipes. They did one better: they offered to host a dinner with traditional German recipes if I would make and bring sauerkraut. Done! Thankfully, I remembered the week ahead of time because this sauerkraut needs to ferment for between 3 to 10 days; this version was 7 days. And...it was a hit! One of the kids said she didn't normally like sauerkraut, but she liked mine. The host stuck his nose in the jar before we served and nodded, saying, "That smells right." There are very few ingredients. The only things that I would suggest having to make your life easier: a mandolin slicer, glass fermentation weights, and a vegetable tamper. I use mine all the time! But you don't need them to make this recipe. They just make this process easier. ...
