"Re-Inventing the Noodle" #MoviesandMunchies

This month I am hosting the #MoviesandMunchies group as we watch  Letters to Juliet . You can read my invitation  here   which includes a brief plot summary. It's really not that much more complicated than that, but it is enjoyable. At least I found it enjoyable! You can read the Risotto all'Amarone that I have already shared this month. Stay tuned for more. I always find movies set in Italy a culinary inspiration. from imdb.com There is a scene in the kitchen of Victor's soon-to-open restaurant when he gushes that he has reinvented the noodle. He keep breaking off pieces and making Sophie taste his "inventions." Ha. The ridiculousness of a person reinventing the noodle stuck with me. I mean, I have a hard time believing that Italian nonne haven't made every possible iteration of a noodle. So, I am just going to share my favorite standard: hand-rolled noodles. I do switch it up by the kind of salt that I use, but why change something that is already fabulous...

Golbaengi-Muchim (Spicy Whelks with Noodles) #LitHappens #FoodieReads

If I had to pick a favorite genre, historical fiction is it. And I decided to pick  The Island of Sea Women: A Novel  by Lisa See * for our March selection in our online book group, Lit Happens. I have read the book before, but was happy to re-read it when another gal suggested it for the group. On the Page This is the story of two friends' lives erected on the framework of the historical matriarchal society where the women in Korea work as  haenyeo  divers. These women free-dive and harvest the ocean's treasures including abalone, urchin, and octopus. You see how their bodies have adapted to withstand the cold and the hardship when they are medically studied and tracked. The men stay home and watch the children. However, despite the matrifocal structure of the divers, property is still in the man's name. And husbans often take the women's wages and squander it through gambling and drinking. Young-sook and Mi-ja are  haeneyo . They grew up together, became diver...

Hong Shao Niu Rou Mian (Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup) #FoodNFlix

This month, I am hosting the Food'N'Flix group as we watch and -  hopefully - get inspired into the kitchen by Spirited Away . This is definitely out of the range of movies the group usually watches, but I hope that the other gals join the fun. On the Screen   imdb.com I had never heard of this movie until my boys purchased it on Amazon. They have long been fans of Studio Ghibli movies though I have never watched any of the movies with them. However, the first time they watched it, both commented that I should suggest it to my foodie movie group. I largely ignored that suggestion until I was reading through a list of top twenty-five films that food lovers have to watch. Okay. I was convinced and offered to host it for our foodie, movie-watching group this month. For those unfamiliar, as I was, Hayao Miyazaki is the Japanese animator, writer, director, producer, and filmmaker whose work with Studio Ghibli has resulted in creative and influential animated films, including...

Ground Turkey and Sautéed Mizuna with Sesame Noodles + Two Shepherds 2018 Skin Fermented Trousseau Gris #WinePW

This is a sponsored post written by me in conjunction with the May #WinePW skin-fermented event. Wine samples  or wines  at an industry discount  were provided for this post and this page may contain affiliate links. This was a pairing I created for the skin-fermented wine event for May's Wine Pairing Weekend with a wine from Two Shepherds Winery.* You can read the tasting notes in my post: Diving into the Skin Fermented Wine Pool of Two Shepherds Winery. Once it goes live, on Friday, May 9th, I'll link to it. But here is the recipe for this simple dish with lots of seasonal flavors.  I was inspired by a bunch of mizuna, or Japanese mustard greens, that I received in my CSA (community-supported agriculture) box. You can use any leafy green that you have! That's one of the things I love about this recipe: you can swap out the protein and the veggies easily. It's the sauce that makes this dish really sing. On the side, I served brocco...

Curry Udon with Prawns #SoupSwappers

Here we are at the April 2020 Soup Saturday Swappers event. Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm  started this event and, every month, I get a new array of soup recipes to put in my to-try pile. This month, Karen of  Karen's Kitchen Stories  is hosting and writes: "Make any soup with noodles of any kind." You have to love flexible prompts, especially in these times when most of the country is sheltered in place and grocery shopping is done sparingly and only when needed! Thankfully, I had everything I needed either in my pantry, my fridge, or my freezer for this creation. Here's the line-up of noodle recipes from the #SoupSwappers... Chicken Cordon Bleu Noodle Soup from Cindy's Recipes and Writings Curry Udon with Prawns from Culinary Adventures with Camilla  Homemade Ravioli and Spinach Soup from Sid's Sea Palm Cooking  Leftover Beef Soup with Noodles from A Day in the Life on the Farm  Pasta e Fagioli Soup from Making Miracles ...
