Pork Wonton Soup with Chives + Kitchen Chinese #CooktheBooks

Here we are the June-July 2020 edition of Cook the Books . Claudia of Honey from Rock picked  Kitchen Chinese: A Novel About Food, Family, and Finding Yourself by Ann Mah.* You can read her invitation: here . On the Page While being annoyingly predictable and about one hundred pages too long, this novel - that is firmly rooted in the chick-lit genre - was a breezy read and an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. The title, Kitchen Chinese, refers to Isabelle's characterization of her fluency in Chinese: Just basic conversation, she explained to her friends. "Simple words I picked up in the kitchen, spending time with my mom. I hardly have the Chinese vocabulary to work as a journalist" (pg. 9). Isabelle ‘Iz’ Lee is of Chinese origin, but she is an American. After being fired from her job in New York for doing a shoddy job at fact-checking a story, Iz ends up moving to Beijing to live with her older sister, Claire, who is a successful attorney there. The two...

'Don't Stop Bayleave-ing' Braised Rabbit and Herb Dumplings + Pre-made Spice Blends #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the Book Club Cookbook . I received complimentary product for the purpose of review and recipe development, but all opinions are honest and they are my own.  This page may contain affiliate links. I love when friends email me with rabbit availability. I am always game! This time around my Enthusiastic Kitchen Elf was adamant, "Mommy, you need to make rabbit and dumplings this time, okay? Not cold rabbit soup , not braised rabbit with gravy ! Rabbit and dumplings." Done. Earlier, my contact at  The Book Club Cookbook  emailed, offering me a few more spice blends as a thank you for some other posts with their new spice blends . You betcha!  I don't usually like to buy spice blends for one reason - there's always added salt. However, these blends are salt-free. Woohoo. So, I picked Don't Stop Bayleave-ing and decided to add it to my rabbit. Ingredients Rabbit 2 to 3 pound rabbit (this ...

'Eat the Baby' Handmade Dumplings #FoodNFlix

Here we are at the February 2019 edition of  Food'N'Flix . And this month, my friend Debra of  Eliot's Eats  is hosting. You can read her invitation  here , but she's invited us to watch  Crazy Rich Asians.*  In addition to the movie being the pick of the month here, the Cook the Books crew is reading the novel for their February-March selection. So, you can join in for the double header, if you'd like. I actually watched this movie twice on the plane to and from Denmark for the holidays. I watched it on the way there, then decided I wanted to see it again. And with an almost twelve hour flight, I watched several movies! This was just one of them. Then  when I realized that it was the February pick, I bought the DVD and have watched it - with my foodie glasses on this time - twice so far. This is one of those rare instances in which I actually prefer the movie to the book. And, I mean, vastly prefer. That almost never happens for me. I didn't c...
