Dragon Fruit Salad Duo #FreakyFruitsFriday #MelissasProduce #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of  Melissa's Produce in conjunction with #FreakyFruitsFriday . I received complimentary product for the purpose of review and recipe development, but all opinions are honest and they are my own.  This page may contain affiliate links. Dragon fruits look really cool. Here's a brief introduction to the dragon fruit . I received several dragon fruit from Melissa's Produce* in preparation for an upcoming #FreakyFruitsFriday event. Starting this Friday - and for two subsequent Fridays - a group of bloggers will be sharing posts that utilize the 'Freaky Fruits' line from Melissa's. Reviews at my table are usually mixed. "They are cool looking, but they don't taste like anything really." That sentiment seemed to be mirrored by several of my friends. After I posted a photo of them, I got: Well there’s another fruit I’ve never tasted in my life—gonna have to go get one and check it out. ...

A Plate of Creepy Crawlies and Other Ghoulish Gobbles #FoodNFlix

This month Kimberly from  Coffee and Casseroles  is hosting this month's edition of #FoodNFlix. Read her invitation:  here . She asked us to watch  The Addams Family or Addams Family Values.* It seems an appropriate month for good, ghastly fun; it's Halloween month and they are releasing a new (animated) Addams Family movie this month. And you have plenty of time to join in the fun, if you wish. Posts aren't due to Kimberly until October 30th. I mentioned the assignment and R said that he had just seen that DVD. So, he dug it out of the cabinet for me and all four of us sat down to watch it. D kept asking, "What is this movie? Why are we watching it?" Sadly, I think that he inherited my sense of humor...or rather lack of one. But the rest of us didn't complain too much and might have even enjoyed it. On the Screen The Addams Family opens with a scene of Christmas carolers and pans up to the housetop where you see the Addamses ready to upend ...

Pretty Simple Greek Salad #PrettySimpleCooking

Excerpted from A Couple Cooks |  Pretty Simple Cooking: 100 Delicious Vegetarian Recipes to Make You Fall in Love with Real Food  by Sonja Overhiser and Alex Overhiser. Copyright © 2018. Available from Da Capo Lifelong Books, an imprint of Perseus Books, LLC, a subsidiary of Hachette Book Group, Inc. Back in February, I hosted a  Pretty Simple Dinner Party  to celebrate the release of  the cookbook  A Couple Cooks - Pretty Simple Cooking: 100 Delicious Vegetarian Recipes to Make You Fall in Love with Real Food  by Sonja and Alex Overhiser.* Then I participated in Take Two in August . Now, as we head into Fall, Sonja and Alex have launched their monthly Pretty Simple Cooking Club. Well, jumping into that was a no-brainer. I already have the book and I have enjoyed all of the recipes I've tried so far. There don't seem to be any rules for this club. They send out the recipe picks; we cook, post, and share. Done! This month, they selected: Gre...

Poulet au Porto #FantasticalFoodFight

I love the Fantastical Food Fight coordinated by Sarah of  Fantastical Sharing of Recipes . For more information about the event, click  here . I haven't been very good at participating, but this month, I couldn't resist.  Our theme for the month is: Julia Child in honor of her birthday; so the group must be a Julia Child or Julia Child-inspired recipe. The Julia Child Fantastical Food Fight An InLinkz Link-up Poulet au Porto Chicken with Port Wine, Cream and Mushrooms I'll just start with this: this is a very loose adaptation of the version at juliachildsrecipes.com ( here ). Very loose. I was inspired by her recipe, but wanted to have crispy chicken skin...and I didn't have any cognac to set aflame though I am certain that my boys would have loved that detail. In any case, this is my version of a Julia Child recipe; this is not her recipe. For example, she starts with already roasted chicken. I opted to cook my chicken thighs on the ...

Peppery Apple Cocktail #CrazyIngredientChallenge

I love the idea behind the Crazy Ingredient Challenge. In the Crazy Ingredient Challenge, we are assigned two ingredients to cook and create.  Lori of  Lori's Culinary Creations   and Kelly of  Passion Kneaded   are our fearless leaders. So, here goes... May's Crazy In gredient Challenge = apples and bell peppers The Rest of the Crew An InLinkz Link-up Peppery Apple Cocktail  At first glance, those ingredients seemed tough to pair. Then I realized that they have been partners in several of my recipes, including  Apple-Herb Chutney with Lamb Lollipops . I considered making a version of my Apple Pico de Gallo and adding in some fresh peppers; then I thought about re-making my Sweet Pepper Masa Cake and adding apples or applesauce to the batter. But, while I was brainstorming, Jake tossed out the idea of a cocktail and the gears started spinning. I've made one before - Sweet Bell Cocktail - so it wasn't such a crazy sugg...
