SRC May Reveal: Baking and Boys

Secret Recipe Club
It's time for the May Secret Recipe Club reveal...

What's the Secret Recipe Club? It's a group started by Amanda of Amanda's Cookin'. Each month, every participant is assigned to someone else's blog from which they pick a recipe - or two - to make and post, but it's all a secret until the big day. Today's the day. I always love a kitchen challenge and some culinary adventure.

This month I was assigned Baking and Boys. Katrina, a fellow resident of Testosterone Land, writes "My life as of late is lovin' these four boys and my husband, too. Oh, and I bake, too." I can relate. And bake Katrina does. Along with two friends, she created a recipe for Hard-Boiled Egg Cookies. How about Chocolate Truffle Tartlets with Andes Mint and Oreos? Her Apple Tartlet for Fall looks delectable. I think I gained ten pounds just by reading her blog!

From her chicken pot pie post, I made this version. I followed her instructions pretty much to a 't', so click over there for the recipe. I did change up the vegetables, using parsnips, fresh peas, leeks and rhubarb. And I used fresh mint as a seasoning. Apologies in advance for not creating a more thorough post, but I'm out the door for a funeral right now. Sorry. Thanks to Jane for posting this into the link-up for me.

Thank you, Katrina, for the great inspiration. I can't remember the last time I made a pot pie

  2. Ah! Thanks for baking from my blog. So fun. And yes, baking is my forte. ;) Your post makes me want pot pie for dinner! I have never put rhubarb in something savory. Sounds like a must try! Sorry you've had to go to a funeral. :)

  3. Rhubarb - I've never thought to put that in a savory dish, let alone a pot pie. Fabulous idea, Camilla. Sending you good thoughts for today.

Hot Chocolate Agasajo-Style {Spice It Up!}

photo by D For my Spice It Up! kiddos this week, I was looking for an exotic drink to serve while we learned about saffron. I found a recipe from food historian Maricel Presilla that mimicked traditional Spanish hot chocolate from the 17th century where it was served at lavish receptions called agasajos . When I teach, I don't always get to shoot photos. Thankfully, D grabbed my camera and snapped a few. Ingredients serves 14-16 1 gallon organic whole milk 3 T dried rosebuds - or 2 t rosewater 2 t saffron threads, lightly crushed 3 T ground cinnamon 3 whole tepin chiles, crushed 2 vanilla beans, split lengthwise 1 C organic granulated sugar 1 lb. bittersweet chocolate Procedure In a large soup pot that can hold a gallon plus, combine milk, dried rosebuds (or rosewater, if you are using that), saffron threads, ground cinnamon, chiles, vanilla beans, and sugar and warm over medium heat till it steams. Whisk to dissolve sugar, then lower heat an...

Ki Ngombo = Okra

In honor of Mardi Gras, I searched for traditional recipes for gumbo...only to discover that there is no canonical recipe for gumbo. It seems there are as many recipes for gumbo as there are cooks!  The only two constants in a gumbo: variety and okra. The term 'gumbo' likely comes from an African dialect whose word for okra is ki ngombo .  Gumbos can have meat, seafood, just about anything.  In Mark Huntsman's "The History of Gumbo" he refers to written mentions of using muskrat and owl in gumbo recipes.  I embraced the unlimited potential of ingredients and opted for a combination of fish, chicken, pancetta, oysters, mussels, octopus, shrimp, and squid...and lots of okra!
