I've heard the phrase 'plum crazy'...at least that's what I thought I was hearing. But, being the word woman that I am, I decided to make sure that's really what the phrase is. Turns out my instincts were correct; it's not 'plum crazy' it's 'plumb crazy.' With a 'b.'
According to the online Oxford English Dictionary - and other sources - "plumb" evolved to mean "very" because a plumb line is a line that is absolutely level . So plumb equals 'absolutely,' or at the very least 'very.'
Whatever the etymology, I whipped up some plum(b) crazy liqueur that will be ready in about three months. So, we'll be pouring this for Halloween this year. Can't wait.
3 C peeled, halved fruit - with the seed left intact on one half
2 C organic granulated sugar
3-1/2 C vodka
Mix everything together in a large glass canister and let the mixture age in a cool place for 3 months. Stir once a week or once every other week. The color will change to a deep red.
