An Autumnal Cheese Board, Wild Plum Sauce, & Donati's 2016 Merlot #MerlotMe #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf Donati Family Vineyard, one of the  #MerlotMe   event sponsors. Complimentary wine was provided for this post and this page may contain affiliate links. However, all opinions expressed here are my own. You remember that October is a month for celebrating the Merlot grape, right? Well, get ready for a bunch of Merlot-food pairings from me as I prepare to take part in the month-long #MerlotMe celebration. In preparation, participating vineyards ship bottles of their wines out to food and wine bloggers. It's just about my favorite time of the year as I am introduced to many new producers from all over the country. Great fun! This year, I received two bottles from Donati Family Vineyard this one - their  2016 Merlot - plus their 2015 The Immigrant. I've already shared my Wild Game Sausages with Pasta  that I poured with the latter. This post is about the 2016 Merlot that I paired with an autumn-t...

Plum-Vanilla Bean Jam #StoneFruit

Since our friends are away for the summer, she told me to help myself to the plums on her tree. You don't have to tell me twice. So, with two carrots in hand - one for each of their dogs (to minimize barking) - the boys and I liberated pounds of plums from the Mobley tree and came home to do some summer cooking. We are going plum(b) crazy this afternoon. First up: jam. 2 pounds fruit, rinsed, peel, and sliced 1 C organic granulated sugar 3/4 C liquid (I used a mixture of water and cherry juice - from the other summer cooking going on) 1/2 lemon, halved and juiced   1 vanilla bean, sliced and seeded 1. Sterilize the jars for canning by boiling them and their lids. 2. To make the jam, place the fruit, sugar, liquid, and lemon juice into a large pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the vanilla bean seeds and pod. Continue to cook, stirring the jam constantly, for about 15 minutes. 3. Reduce the heat to medium. Hold the jam at a ...

Torta di Prugne {Gluten-Free} #FoodNFlix

This month Evelyne from  CulturEatz  is hosting  Food'N'Flix . Here's  her invitation . She invited us to watch  I am Love .* On the Screen... I am shocked that this movie has never made it onto my to-watch list.I will watch anything set in Italy. Seriously. Anything. And if it's actually in Italian, even better! It's actually a hilarious phenomenon. No matter how long it's been since I left Rome, if I watch a movie in Italian, I begin to think in Italian for several hours; I often try to speak to my family in Italian for a spell, too. My boys just shake their heads and wait till it passes. I am Love  is about the Recchi family whose matriarch is Emma (played by Tilda Swinton), a transplanted Russian who, as she admits, ceased being Russian when she married Tancredi Recchi and moved to Milan. In fact, she admits that Emma isn't her real name; it's the name her husband gave her. She says she  doesn't even remember her birth name, but she...

Plum Polenta Cake {Gluten-Free}

Earlier this week, friends of our who are out of town asked if we could pick their plums, water some plants, and pick up the mail. The boys - and my parents - were game and off they went. They came home with so many plums yesterday. So, I started off with a plum-polenta cake for breakfast this morning. We're still debating on jam versus chutney and shrub versus liqueur. I'll keep you posted. Ingredients 1/2 C  butter, softened + more for greasing the pan 2/3 C organic granulated sugar   1/4 C honey 2 eggs 1/2 C coconut milk 1/2 t salt 1-1/2 C gluten-free flour (I used a mixture of rice flour, brown rice flour, and coconut flour) 3/4 C yellow cornmeal 1/2 t baking powder 1/2 C corn kernels 10 to 12 small, ripe plums Procedure Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Butter a baking dish; I used a 9" square dish. Slice your plums in half, or quarters, and remove the pit. Place the plums in the bottom of the dish and set aside. Cream the butter and sugar to...

Community Night @ Happy Girl: Making Plum Jam

Every now and then,  Happy Girl Kitchen  opens up their doors after-hours for a Community Night where you go, lend a helping hand, and earn a delicious dinner. They had crates upon crates upon crates of delicious carmine plums from Thomas Farm in Aptos. So, we met up with friends to help HGK make their delicious plum jam. You know it's a great night when your face hurts from smiling so much...and you're covered in plum juice. I'm not going to divulge the measurements because the recipe is TOP SECRET. See! But I will tell you what we did. STEP ONE: Pit the plums. No gadget. No knife. Just clean hands!   Here's one full tub... STEP TWO: Weigh the plums. STEP THREE: Add in the sugar.   STEP FOUR: Pour in lemon juice, then mash everything together. At that point, the kids were tired and hungry. So we stopped and feasted on rice, lentils with summer squash, kale with quinoa and cheese, and bread with butte...
