In Our Easter Kitchen for #FoodRevolutionDay

Last Sunday we celebrated Easter...there are many aspects to our celebration. For my parents, it's primarily about resurrection; it's a religious celebration. But it's also about spending time with family. They always have a game picked out that we play between lunch and dessert. This year we played a dice game called Left Center Right. Link to the game below.*  What fun! For the boys, it's about Easter eggs and - maybe - candy and an egg hunt; it's a party.  For my husband, it's about the feast...mostly the desserts. This year he requested a tiramisu. I still need to post that recipe! And, for me, it's about celebrating all the crisp, fresh flavors of Spring. We had Butter-Braised Radishes over Little Gems , Roasted Asparagus and Shaved Fennel , Blueberry Kouign Amann , and more. Signed it. Shared it. #FoodRevolutionDay

"My wish is to create a strong sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity." ~ Jamie Oliver I think that's a succinct - and wonderful - wish for all of us who are fighting to fix our broken food system. It's broken. But it's not irretrievably so. I signed it. And I'm sharing it. Here's the petition . Too many kids don't know that lettuce grows in the ground. Too many kids don't realize that meat comes from an animal...not wrapped in cellophane at the grocery store. It takes some effort, but when you connect kids to their food - when you have kids cook their food - they understand food is not just sustenance. It's a story. And as the authors of this food story, it's ours to create! I wear this around my neck almost everyday to remind myself...and remind my family: "Food has a story." We get to write it anyway we want. ...

Speedy Brown Rice, Pea, & Pea Shoot Risotto + Going Meatless for #foodrevolutionday

One of  March 2015 challenges  for the  Jamie Oliver Food Revolution  Ambassadors ( I'm the Monterey #FRD2015 rep! ) is to... Go Meatless. Meat Free Week in the United Kingdom is March 23-29, 2015. While I knew that I didn't want to go meat free for the entire week - we are traveling that week and have friends staying with us - I planned to, at least, do some Meatless Mondays during the month of March.  We have very few allergies in our family and I try really hard not to voice the words "we don't eat ____________." That includes meat. I prefer to clarify my restrictions; "we don't eat chicken that's been treated with hormones and antibiotics" or "we don't eat cattle from feed lots." But we can all stand to reduce our meat intake.  Back when I was a vegetarian, for more than half a decade, I had a chart on my refrigerator about what foods to combine to make complete proteins: grains + legumes or greens + seeds, for e...

Cooking for Loved Ones on Valentines' Day #foodrevolutionday

One of  February challenges  for the  Jamie Oliver Food Revolution  Ambassadors ( I'm the Monterey #FRD2015 rep! ) is to... Cook for Your Loved Ones! We've been watching Season Two of Mind of a Chef , featuring Chef Sean Brock. He does a Low Country Boil in one episode. And it looked positively amazing. My twelve-year-old requested a clambake on the beach for our Valentines' Day dinner. What a fabulous adventure! Click for that recipe post: Sweethearts' Seafood Boil . Earlier in the day I made bacon roses, Potato Roses, and perfectly poached eggs. Because my three have more pronounced sweet tooths than I do, I usually make a treat as well...some kind of truffle. This year, a couple of days early, I made Rosewater Truffles with Rose Crystals . They were delicious if I might say so myself. Did you cook for your loved ones on Valentines'?  What did you make?
