Beefed Up Brown Mary #LitHappens #FoodieReads

We are kicking off 2021 in our online Lit Happens book group with Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore.* And though it's not a cook-from-the-book kinda group, I am almost always inspired into the kitchen after reading a book or watching a movie.  On the Page image from amazon.com I honestly can't even remember what made me pick up this book, or choose it for the group, but it was a diversion for an evening or two. The ensuing online discussion with the other readers has been much more interesting in my opinion. The premise of this book - that Oona time-travel every year on her birthday and lives her life out of order - is intriguing. And having seen the rave reviews, I was excited to read it. But I struggled through this story because I didn't care for the protagonist.  Oona is selfish and though she’s aware she’s living her life in random, one-year segments, she’s remarkably uninterested in any kind of introspection. Her main goal in life seems to be having fun, rega...

Whiskey-Pickled Jalapeños

I have no idea how long this post has been in my drafts folder. But I am determined to clean up my blog which means posting all of these old recipes that never made it to public viewing. Sorry!  These are not processed, so they are not shelf stable. Keep them in your fridge and eat them within two to three weeks. If you process them in a water bath, they'll keep longer. Ingredients  makes three half pint jars or so 1 pound jalapeños, sliced into 1/2" rounds (I had both green and yellow peppers) 1-1/4 C vinegar (I used an apple cider vinegar) 1 C whiskey 1/2 C honey (I used a raw local honey) 2 t coriander seeds 1 t mixed peppercorns 1/2 t black mustard seeds 2 bay leaves Procedure In a medium saucepan, combine vinegar, whiskey, honey, coriander seeds, peppercorns, mustard seeds, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Place jalapeños in the pan and let stand for 3 to 4 minutes. Spoon jalapeños into smal...

Irish Coffee for Winter #WarmUpDrinks

Happy New Year and welcome to the second installment of the Winter Warm-Up Drink Series hosted by Ellen of  Family Around the Table ! For the next five Fridays, now, we'll be featuring winter drinks guaranteed to warm you right up! For one, I didn't use Irish whiskey. I had Scotch whiskey. And secondly, I don't sweeten it or use whipped cream. I prefer to add a dollop of foamed milk on top. But I am always of the mindset that you use what you have. And no mat...

Tiramisù for a Crowd

To end the evening for R's fundraising dinner on Sunday, I wanted a dessert that looked impressive, could be served family-style at the table, and was either Italian or Greek. I considered trays of baklava until I realized that I've never made that. And this was not a time to experiment.  So, I landed on my fall-back: tiramisù. It was a hit. Pare the amounts down for the servings that you need. I needed to serve a crowd, but this can easily be cut in half or thirds.  Also, you want to assemble this dessert the night before you're serving so that the flavors have a chance to combine and the cookies soften. Ingredients  serves 30 6 packages of lady finger cookies (I only used 5-1/2) 3 C + 1 C espresso or strongly brewed coffee 1 C liqueur (I used a chocolate whiskey for this version) 12 eggs, separated into yolks and whites 12 T organic granulated sugar five 8-ounce tubs mascarpone cheese 6 C organic heavy whipping cream unsweetened cocoa pow...

The Jasmine McCann #FoodNFlix

This month's  Food'N'Flix  event was hosted by my friend Courtney over at  Fictional Fare . You can read her invitation:  here . She asked us to watch  Secondhand Lions .* I had never heard of the movie much less watched it. But with a cast that includes Haley Joel Osment, Michael Caine, and Robert Duvall, Kyra Sedgwick, and Josh Lucas, I knew it had potential. Little did I know that it would become a family favorite; and we watched it twice in one day! On the Screen Let me set the stage: Walter (Josh Lucas) gets a phone call that his two uncles - Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine) have died. Then, you're dropped straight into 1950s Texas when young Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is being dropped off at his great uncles' house by his flaky mother, Mae (Kyra Sedgwick). When they see Mae approach, they are standing in their pond, fishing. [Hub and Garth look up, staring between Mae and each other in confusion.] Garth: Huh? Hub: You send...
