The Letters to Juliet #MoviesandMunchies Round-Up + Wild Huckleberry Swirl Gelato

This month, I hosted the online Movies & Munchies group and asked the crew to watch Letters to Juliet. You can read my invitation here . Our group is small and mighty, but the posts always make me hungry. The Recipe Round-Up Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm shared her  Mushroom Spaghetti . Wendy shared: "There was quite a bit of food inspiration.  When the film first starts Sophie is hand fed fresh spaghetti by her fiance.  When they first arrive in Verona her fiance is going to a conference about truffles and is very upset when Claire can't understand why he would want to sit in a class about mushrooms.  He corrects her, dispelling the notion that truffles are just a mushroom. Mushrooms show up again at the end of the film convincing me that I wanted to make a pasta recipe that starred mushrooms." Terri of Our Good Life posted Letters to Juliet Inspired Mushroom Risotto . Terri sets the stage: "A group of Italian women, Juliet's secretaries, answers ea...

The Only You Round-Up + Oven-Roasted Black Bass #FoodNFlix

This month I am hosting the Food'N'Flix group and I invited them to watch Only You . You can read my invitation here . Here's what the bloggers shared... Pasta Debra of Eliot's Eats offered a Roman Pasta and Only You , sharing, "This was a new film for me, even though it would have been a film the girlfriends and I would have sought out in 1994.   I loved the vintage wedding photos during the opening.  That set up the plot well.   This is the October film so the Ouija board, candles  and fortune tellers help set a seasonal vibe." Her Bucatini all’Amatriciana looked amazing and was something that I made often when I lived in Rome.  Pizza Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm made White Clam Pizza . Her synopsis of the movie reminded me of how much travel has changed since 9-11: "What ensues is a fun escapade through airports, onto planes and into Italy.  You could tell that this film was definitely pre 9-11.  There were no security stops and...

A JAWS-ome 4th of July Celebration #FoodNFlix

When I saw the July Food'N'Flix invitation from Amy of Amy's Cooking Adventures , I hesitated. JAWS.*  Really? Okay. Unfortunately, it wasn't available at our library until August 2nd...and this was the July assignment. So, I ordered it on Amazon and streamed it one evening last week.  Food'N'Flix is a monthly online event when we are assigned a movie and, hopefully, are moved into the kitchen to make something inspired by the movie. I had no idea how much fun we would have with this movie given that, well, the only food I anticipated seeing were the people who were victims of the man-eating shark! You can read Amy's invitation - and see her amazing shark cake - here . On the Screen from imdb.com I am pretty sure that I watched this movie one summer when my older cousins were trying to scare us. But that was in the early 80s, I think, and I don't remember much about it at all. And I certainly didn't remember that it was a 4th of July movie. I mean, ...

The #FoodNFlix Pickle Party + Garlic-Dill Saltwater Pickles (Also Called Half-Sour or Lacto-Fermented Pickles) #FoodNFlix

This month, I hosted the Food'N'Flix group and asked them to watch The Pickle Recipe . You can read my invitation here . Here's what the bloggers shared... OgĂłrki Kiszone   by A Day in the Life on the Farm Wendy wrote, "I had never heard of this 2016 film before. I was surprised to see that it was filmed here in my home state Michigan, set in Detroit. I love watching films that are filled with familiar images."  She describes the movie as "a fun, light hearted comedy that reminds us of what is truly important in this world.  Joey learns many lessons while struggling with his conscience and his relationships." And Wendy whipped up her fermented Polish dill pickles. I can't wait to try her recipe - OgĂłrki Kiszone . Beet Pickled Eggs by  Amy's Cooking Adventures Amy was unimpressed by the movie, writing, " The Pickle Recipe is a fairly underwhelming film in which our protagonist, being short on cash, tries to hoodwink his grandmother out of...

Recipe Round-Up: The #FoodNFlix Bloggers are Spirited Away

This month I invited the bloggers of Food'N'Flix to join me in watching Spirited Away . You can read my invitation here . I think it might have been a challenging movie to find and I apologize for that. Wendy found her copy at the library and I know I purchased it for viewing on Amazon. And it also wasn't a typical genre for our movie picks or the movies we prefer, I suspect. But I am glad that a few of us were able to watch and get inspired into the kitchen. Elizabeth of Literature and Limes served Japanese Chicken Legs . She wrote, "While not my favorite of movies, it was still cute. The imagination throughout was fun and did wave a great plot line together." And she created a winner of a recipe that was teen-approved. That's always a plus. "I was inspired by the scene where Chihiro’s parents devour the food and turn into pigs. Her mom appears to be eating some type of poultry. There are dumplings, rolls. I probably would have eaten all that food t...

The #FoodNFlix Bloggers Kick Off the Summer With a Virtual Hawaiian Vacation

This month, I hosted the Food'N'Flix group, asking them to watch something that was either set in Hawaii or filmed in Hawaii. You can read my invitation - here - where I offered some suggestions. I also didn't limit the picks to movies. Television shows were fair game, too. I know that as my household is entering our fifteenth week of being sheltered in place to try and flatten the curve of the coronavirus, and after our family vacation to the Big Island was canceled, I definitely needed a vacation. Even if it were only a virtual escape. This month, because of the flexible theme, we had inspiration from a short, from an animated film, from a rom-com, from an action movie, and even a television series. I'm grateful to the bloggers who joined in the party!  Mahalo plenty ! Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm whipped up Blue Hawaii Cocktails   inspired by watching Pearl Harbor. "I decided on the 2001 film Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding...

Multi-Use Costumes, Supplì al Telefono, and Other #StarWarsFood for #FoodNFlix

Just a reminder why you're being bombarded by Star Wars-inspired recipes this month. Kelley of  Simply Inspired Meals is hosting a month of Star Wars recipes for  Food'N'Flix . You can read her invitation  here . I've decided to wrap up my Star Wars-inspired posts with a ball-shaped recipe in honor of our favorite sentient beach ball. BB-8! But first... Multi-Use Costumes My husband and his dad pals are out of control with the Halloween costumes...and they are die-hard Star Wars fans. Die. Hard. Whenever a new movie comes out, we go to opening night and wait in line for hours, taking turns running to the restaurant near the theatre for cocktails.  When The Force Awakens*  came out, not only did they create these costumes with the kids for Halloween 2015; but they  had  to go out for a photo shoot on the sand dunes. Here's R and one of his best friends (since kindergarten). He's BB-8 and she's Rey. If you are asking: How does so...
