The Letters to Juliet #MoviesandMunchies Round-Up + Wild Huckleberry Swirl Gelato

This month, I hosted the online Movies & Munchies group and asked the crew to watch Letters to Juliet. You can read my invitation here . Our group is small and mighty, but the posts always make me hungry. The Recipe Round-Up Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm shared her  Mushroom Spaghetti . Wendy shared: "There was quite a bit of food inspiration.  When the film first starts Sophie is hand fed fresh spaghetti by her fiance.  When they first arrive in Verona her fiance is going to a conference about truffles and is very upset when Claire can't understand why he would want to sit in a class about mushrooms.  He corrects her, dispelling the notion that truffles are just a mushroom. Mushrooms show up again at the end of the film convincing me that I wanted to make a pasta recipe that starred mushrooms." Terri of Our Good Life posted Letters to Juliet Inspired Mushroom Risotto . Terri sets the stage: "A group of Italian women, Juliet's secretaries, answers ea...

Spaghetti Aglio e Olio #CooktheBooks #FoodieReads

This month, and next, Simona of Briciole assigned the  Cook the Books crew 97 Orchard: An Edible  History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by Jane Ziegelman *. This is a bi-monthly book group, so you have till the end of July to read it and join the party.  You can read her invitation here . On the Page   This book looks at the immigrant experience through the lens of five different families, all residents of the tenement apartments at 97 Orchard Street. Irish, German, European Jews, Polish, and Italian families give Ziegelman a framework on which to hang her narrative. From the crowded apartments and the dimly lit stairwells, immigrants gathered and balanced their new lives with preserving culinary traditions from their homelands. Ziegelman explores the immigrants' food cultures in their native lands and examines what did or didn't transfer to the United States or, even more fascinating, how the synthesized or adapted to what was avail...

Deep Conversations, Farm Fresh Eggs, + Molly's Spaghetti & Meatballs #FoodNFlix

This month Wendy, from  A Day in the Life on the Farm , is hosting this month's edition of Food'N'Flix . And she has asked us to post a recipe inspired by  The Biggest Little Farm .* Read her invitation:  here . Before she assigned this, the movie wasn't on my radar at all. But, on one rainy afternoon this weekend, I watched it twice. The first time, I snuggled up with D, my Enthusiastic Kitchen Elf and resident gardener. If you follow my blog regularly, you'll probably know that he just finished building his sustainable garden fed by a fog collector and wrote a 50+ page paper about it that took me days to edit! Read my post: From Personal Project Garden to Victory Garden . Jake could hear the movie while he was working remotely in the living room and came in to ask about it when he was finished. He was intrigued, so I sat down with him to watch it again. On the Screen The Biggest Little Farm  is a documentary film about John and Molly C...

Spaghetti with Creamy Clam Sauce #FoodieReads

I almost didn't finish  We Never Asked for Wings  by Vanessa Diffenbaugh*, the book that was chosen as our November Lit Happens selection. I  loved Diffenbaugh's first book,  The Language of Flowers , and started - and stopped - this book multiple times during the first two weeks of the month. Then I put it down and couldn't find it until today. Seriously. I didn't have the book in my hands until the last day of the month. Thankfully, R was busy working on college application essays; D was making felted nisser  (Danish Christmas gnomes); and Jake was working on his Christmas forest. Yes, not just a tree. You'll see soon... But all of their activities allowed me to settle in on my bean bag and read this book cover to cover while sipping mulled cider and eating gingerbread cookies this afternoon. Then I ran to the store, inspired by a dish Rick makes for Letty's Christmas party. More on that soon. On the Page As I mentioned I loved her first bo...
