Frosted Pink Peppercorn Shortbread

I still don't remember what prompted me to make these cookies. I had been staring at a jar of pink peppercorns. Maybe. But I was in charge of all the sweets for our fundraising dinner and decided to make some pink peppercorn shortbread cookies. Then, because I thought people might find them too savory, I added a dollop of beet-dyed pink frosting. Little did I know that these would be the surprise hit of the nine treats I made. I never even got one; but I'll take my husband's word for it that these were good. And you'll probably seeing these in heart-shape for upcoming Valentines' Day! Also, I scented these with Aquavit which, despite how long Scandinavians have been making and drinking aquavit, it's largely unknown outside of those countries. It's such a shame because, as a spirit, it's completely beguiling. The name 'aquavit' derives from two Latin words: aqua vitae and translates to "water of life." The French have a cle...

Honeycomb Almond Shortbread

After watching an inspiring fifteen minute video by cookie artiste Susan Spungen, last week, I found the article: 12 Stunning Cookies that will Impress Everyone You Know that featured Spungen's recipes and more gorgeous photos of her creations. I had a few kids over here on Friday evening, made them watch the video, and asked them to pick three of their favorites. The honeycomb recipe received a whopping four votes and was at the top of three lists. So, I started with that. Let me say that I substituted almonds for peanuts and my Magic Unicorn salt blend for the flake salt. This was a stunning hit all around! I have tried honeycomb candy before that was not a favorite. This version, they said, didn't have the strange aftertaste that they despised in my other attempts. Ingredients makes a 9" x 13" pan Shortbread 1 C (2 sticks) butter ½ C organic light brown sugar ½ C organic granulated sugar 1 t pure vanilla paste 2½ C flour 1 C ground almo...

Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies

Jake doesn't usually request things. He just eats what I make with rare exceptions. So, when he requested Earl Grey shortbread cookies to take for his guys' weekend, I happily obliged. These are quick and easy to make and travel well. If you're looking for a cookie to put on holiday trays or into Christmas packages, this is a tasty candidate. You can substitute for any kind of tea that you like. Ingredients makes approximately 20 cookies 10 T butter 1/2 C organic granulated sugar 2 T loose leaf Earl Grey tea 1 egg, beaten 1-3/4 C flour Procedure Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Beat the butter and sugar until fluffy. Stir in tea leaves until well combined. Beat in the egg, then carefully fold in the flour. Roll the dough into a long cylinder. Put the dough in parchment paper or plastic wrap and chill for about an hour, until the dough is firm enough to slice. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough cylinder widthwise into 1/4" slices and pla...

(Egg-Free) Cat Scratch Shortbread Cookies #Sponsored

This post is sponsored  by Adagio Teas .  I received complimentary product for the purpose of review . All opinions are mine alone. Here's another recipe inspired by the  Wicked Teas Sampler Set   I received from  Adagio Teas .* Their Limited Edition Wicked Teas features six Halloween themed teas packaged in spooky metal tins, including this one - Cat Scratch. Cat Scratch is a black tea with cinnamon pieces, cocoa nibs, and some confetti sprinkles thrown in for good measure. The caramel notes in the tea made me think of cookies and I decided to finally give an eggless cookie a try. One of D's good friends is allergic to eggs. So, whenever I bring cookies for the robotics team, he always asks, "Mrs. Mann, those have eggs, right?" Yes. I'm sorry! I've been reading about different substitutes for eggs and thought that the chia seed option might work for these as it already has black stir-ins. So, I whipped up a batch and Jake took the container in when...

Love-Hate Stained Glass Hearts #FoodNFlix #StarWarsFood

Today's cookies are part of my offerings for August's  Food'N'Flix  event.  Kelley of Simply Inspired Meals is hosting a month-long round-up of Star Wars recipes for   Food'N'Flix . You can read her invitation  here . I was inspired to make a cookie in honor of my favorite scoundrel and his princess! Love-Hate from disney.fandom.com Han Solo and Leia Organa's is a classic love story, and one of my favorite patterns. I've always had a soft spot for enemies that eventually set aside their differences and fall madly in love with each other. Love-hate relationships are much more interesting - at least in books and movies! My favorite thing about love-hate relationships: the complexity of the characters. They’re usually hilariously flawed, highly relatable, and - most importantly - they illustrate that the road to true love can be bumpy.  Han and Leia have that perfect blend of passion and hatred that I look for in my fictional couples. On...
