Calavera de Azúcar for Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos . Day of the dead. But, no, this is not a morbid holiday where zombies rule. This is about remembering. I am grateful that my boys were able to know three of their great-grandparents...and still have Jake's grandmother. But Zanne, Curt, and Matt, you are gone too soon, my friends! So, this weekend we made Calavera de Azúcar as a way to remember those we have lost. I picked up a simple skull mold earlier this week. Easy! Ingredients  Makes 1-2 sugar skulls, depending on your mold size. You can easily double or triple this, as needed 1 C organic granulated sugar 2 t meringue powder 1-1/2 t water Procedure  In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar, meringue powder and water together until it all resembles wet sand. Pick up a handful of the mixture and squeeze it together. If it holds its shape, it's ready. If it falls apart, add a little bit more water. Fill your skull mold with the wet sugar, pressing down firmly to compact it. S...

Molded Hard-Boiled Eggs

From my Lunchbox Wars linky , Erin from Making Memories with Your Kids shared a recipe for Hard Boiled Eggs Served with a Smile . I thought: what a great idea! And I, promptly, ordered some from amazon ; I got the star, heart, bunny, bear, fish, and car. So, for the first day of school, last week, I decided these would make a nice surprise. I gave them each one at breakfast to which Dylan asked, "WHY does my egg have a smile?" Then I figured the bear looked close enough to a wombat...so I included that in his lunch with a note that read: enjoy your wombat egg. In hindsight, I should have been accurate and written: enjoy your wombat- shaped egg. Because my lil' wombat-phile was mortified that I might have possibly cooked a wombat fetus and tried to serve it to him. Oye. When the egg came home untouched, I asked why. He told me, horrified. Riley laughed and said, "Silly goose, wombats don't lay eggs. They give birth to a live wombat baby!" Need...

Han Solo in ... Chocolate!

Almost two years ago one of my favorite bloggers - Rook No. 17 - posted about making her own mold from a Han Solo in carbonite toy . I never got around to (1) finding a Han Solo in carbonite toy of my own and (2) figuring out how to make a mold with Silicone Plastique. But I've always enjoyed the idea of this treat: Han Solo frozen in a block of carbonite, I mean dark chocolate. I found some pre-made chocolates at ThinkGeek for $11.99 ; they also had a silicone mold to make ice cubes or chocolate for $9.99 . No brainer - twelve dollars for something that we could enjoy once or ten dollars for something we could use multiple times. Done. I ordered it and if just arrived. Time to temper some chocolate! This is going to make some of my favorite Star Wars fans a very nice stocking stuffer.
