Improv Cooking Challenge: Briwat Bi Loz (Moroccan Almond Pastries in Honey Syrup)

Welcome to the October 2018 version of  Improv Cooking Challenge . This group is headed up by Nichole of  Cookaholic Wife . The idea behind Improv Cooking Challenge: we are assigned two ingredients and are challenged to create a recipe with those two things. This month's items: honey and nuts. Okay, I'll admit the first word that came to mind with those combination - Cherrios! Not that I buy Honey Nut Cherrios, but I remember them from my childhood. My mind immediately went to: Can I make Cherrios?!? No, I decided, that sounds like a crazy person talking. So, I decided to make one of my favorite desserts...and I roped the Enthusiastic Kitchen Elf into helping me.  Before I get to that, though... An InLinkz Link-up Briwat Bi Loz adapted from Claudia Roden's Arabesque* We made these once before - as the final course of our  Claudia Rodin-Inspired Thanksgiving Menu   last year. I liken this to a less sticky, less heavy baklava. ...

Suquet de Pescados (Catalan Seafood Stew) #FishFridayFoodies

It's time for Fish Friday Foodies' September event. We are a group of seafood-loving bloggers, rallied by Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm , to   share fish and seafood recipes on the third Friday of the month.  This is, easily, my favorite recipe sharing event of the month. I always come away with a list of recipes that I just have to try! And this month, I am hosting. I urged my blogger friends: "Bring your favorite seafood stew to Fish Friday Foodies for our September event. Think Cioppino, Moqueca, or anything else that has CHUNKY seafood in a broth or sauce." The Other Stews An InLinkz Link-up Suquet de Pescados So, I ended up scheduling this for dinner on a day when I left work early. Not for fun. I was sick. My nose was running and I had a raging headache. I hate that first cold of the year. Ugh. I just wanted to sit on my bean bag with a mug of tea and watch a movie. But I had the ingredients calling to me and you just don't...

The Precise Kitchen Elf's Meyer Lemon Squares

"Mom," said the Precise Kitchen Elf, "I signed up to bring lemon squares for my English class potluck on Thursday." Okay, remind me to get everything out for you on Wednesday. So, last night, he took a break from studying for finals to make a triple batch of lemon squares. One batch went to his potluck; a second batch went to work with Jake; and the final batch stayed home.  I haven't tried them, but I got an email from Jake's boss that read: "Your lemon bars..... Nailed it! The ratio of lemon to crust is perfection. Truly made my morning. Thank you!!!!!"  Ingredients makes two 9" x 13" pans Crust 4 C flour 1 C organic powdered sugar 1-1/2 C butter (3 sticks), cold and cubed 2 to 3 T cold water 2 to 3 T limoncello or gin (or more water if you don't want to use alcohol) zest from 2 organic Meyer lemons ground almonds, as needed Topping 8 eggs 2 C organic granulated sugar 1/2 C flour ...

Albóndigas de Frailes (Friars' Meatball Soup) #KitchenMatrixCookingProject

Today is our fourth May post for our Kitchen Matrix Project, named after Mark Bittman's  Kitchen Matrix  cookbook. You can read about the year-long project:  here . This month, I chose the recipes and went with a Latin theme. So, we have worked with masa; we made salsa; we braised carnitas. And so on...you get the idea. This week I chose Mexican soups, but wasn't really inspired by any of the recipes listed. Darn it. But I will try his tortilla soup and pork soup soon. Just wasn't feeling it this week. Sorry. The #KitchenMatrixCookingProject Mexican Soups An InLinkz Link-up Albóndigas de Frailes  (Friars' Meatball Soup) Albóndigas soup is a traditional Mexican soup featuring spicy meatballs offset by the fresh flavors of vegetables and herbs. This wasn't one of Bittman's recipes under 'Mexican Soups', but it's one of my family's favorites, so I'm sharing it anyway! And, yes, this has my California twist include...

Roasted Asparagus Soup #SoupSwappers

Whenever it's Spring, I find myself cooking with lots of asparagus. And it got me thinking about hosting a Spring soup event for the Soup Saturday Swappers that is organized by Wendy of A Day on the Life on the Farm . I asked to host this month and I wrote: "Winter is loosening its grip on the world...and our produce. Let's create and share some soups that feature the darlings of Spring. Think fennel, peas, and whatever tickles your fancy." I decided to go with asparagus, but first... The Spring Soup Pots An InLinkz Link-up Ingredients 2 to 2-1/2 pounds asparagus, ends trimmed 4 Spring onions, outer layer peeled away  olive oil freshly ground sea salt freshly ground pepper 2 C organic chicken broth 2 T ground almonds organic lemon for garnish Procedure Preheat oven to 400F. Place the asparagus spears and Spring onions into baking pans. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 15 minutes. Turn the ...

'Just Like a Woman' Meatballs #FoodNFlix

Here we are at the April Food'N'Flix event and I'm hosting! You can read my invitation: here . I invited the bloggers to watch A Touch of Spice .* And, truth be told, I had never watched the movie myself, but I knew that I would like it. I was correct. What a beautiful movie! On the Screen Okay, so you already know that I was quite taken with this movie. The scenes in the past were filmed in muted colors, not quite sepia-toned, but softer than usual. I loved that instead of spraying their correspondence with perfume, they rubbed the postcards in spices. How fun...and fragrant. The movie is structured like a dinner, divided into three parts: appetizers, main course, and dessert. We see Fanis as young child in his grandfather's spice shop; as a Greek citizen being deported out of Turkey; as young adult, still in Greece; and as an astronomy professor who has returned to Turkey when his grandfather is gravely ill. "Grandpa said the word 'gastron...

{Gluten-Free} Marionberry Thumbprint Cookies

Yes, the reason we always try to get a kitchen when we go on vacation: cooking is relaxing for us! Today the boys wanted to make cookies with some local marionberry jam I found at a market. So, the Baker Manns went to town and made a batch of gluten-free thumbprints that Jake could enjoy, too. Ingredients   makes approximately 30 3/4 C butter, at room temperature 3/4 C organic granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 C gluten-free all-purpose flour 1/2 C ground almonds 1 t pure vanilla extract 1 t cold water marionberry jam (or whatever jam you have on hand)   Procedure Preheat oven to 325°F. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in the egg yolks until incorporated. Stir in the flour, ground almonds, and ground cardamom until a flaky dough is formed. Add in the water and pure vanilla extract, gently working the dough until it forms a ball. Place the ball in the freezer for 10 minutes. ...
