HRH Salmon in Mugal Cream Sauce #FoodieReads

I started this book - Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors: A Novel by Sonali Dev* - on Mothers' Day when I packed it into my backpack for a hike.  On the Page While the boys flew their remote control glider on the thermoclines around the dunes, I lounged on the sand, sucked down some coffee, and read about a third of the book. Then, while Jake manned the grill for my Thai-inspired Mothers' Day dinner, later that afternoon, I polished it off.  While I have read Pride and Prejudice  by Jane Austen, I vastly prefer the slightly darker themes explored in her contemporaries' works such as anything by the literary phenomenon that were t he Brontë sisters. I'm less interested in the  exploration of women's reliance on marriage in the pursuit of social standing and economic security as I intrigued by madwomen in attics. Just me? Maybe. At the center is Dr. Trisha Raje, a neurosurgeon at Stanford Medical, who has just created a way to gently nudg...

Pumpkin and Acorn Squash Laksa #SoupSwappers

Here we are at the November Soup Saturday Swappers event. Wendy of  A Day in the Life on the Farm  started this event and, every month, I get a new array of soup recipes to put in my to-try pile. And this month, Ashley of  Cheese Curd in Paradise  is hosting as we explore soups featuring pumpkins or squash. Ashley writes, "Perfect time to cook with these seasonal ingredients. Get creative with an pumpkin or squash ingredients- or maybe a combination!" I just made a pumpkin stew inside a beautiful blue pumpkin! If I had known...I would have saved it for this event. You can see my Jarrahdale Pumpkin Posole: here . But I loved Ashley's idea of mixing pumpkin and acorn squash. So, I went with that. Before I get to my offering, here's the rest of the #SoupSwappers crew... An InLinkz Link-up Pumpkin Laska I opted to share a Malaysian-inspired soup with our two favorite squashes: a pumpkin and an acorn squash. We love that this is creamy, coconuty...

December always means Christmas cookies. Lots and lots of Christmas cookies. I was excited to see that Ellen at Family Around the Table was organizing a week-long event surrounding cookies. Improv Cooking Challenge: Suafa’i

Welcome to the April version of  Improv Cooking Challenge . This group is now headed up by Nichole of  Cookaholic Wife . The idea behind Improv Cooking Challenge: we are assigned two ingredients and are challenged to create a recipe with those two things.  This month's items: bananas and coconut. It just so happens that I made a dessert from Tuvalu for our Cooking Around the World Adventure that included those two ingredients! And I recently learned more than I probably needed to know about bananas when I read Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World by Dan Koeppel. You can read my thoughts and see another banana recipe in this post . While this dessert is not a particularly photogenic one, it was delicious and everyone asked for seconds! I'll call that a success. Suafa’i Ingredients  serves 6 6 medium ripe to overripe bananas 5 C water 1½ C coconut milk 1 C milk ½ C large tapioca pearls ¼ C organic granulated sugar ...

Coconut Cauliflower & Kale Noodle Bowl

Who needs a flowers when your Love bring you purple cauliflower?!? In this case it wasn't my husband, but my littlest Love - one of my Kitchen Elves. The Enthusiastic Kitchen Elf walked up to me in Whole Foods with his hands behind his back. "Mom, can you buy something for me? It's edible." Sure. What it is? "Well, I want to buy it with my own money, but I didn't bring any money. But I want to buy it for you because it so pretty!" He swung his arms out and was holding a beautiful, deep purple head of cauliflower. "Can you buy it for me? I'll give you money when we get home." Absolutely. But, you do know that we're going to eat it, right? You don't want me to put that in a vase, do you? "Well, can it sit in a vase for one night? Then you can cook it." Deal. I actually whipped this up the first night the boys were away for Fall Break. So, D didn't actually get to eat the centerpiece! I served this ...
