Banana Cream Pie + Everyday is a Holiday #FoodieReads

I have long been a fan of George Mahood's writing. Last year I read three of his books and did recipe posts for each one. You can click on the title to go to that original post -   Not Tonight, Josephine: A Road Trip Through Small-Town America ; Free Country: A Penniless Adventure the Length of Britain ; and Travels with Rachel: In Search of South America . So, when I saw  Every Day Is a Holiday  by George Mahood* I ordered it immediately. On the Page I am not sure if it was the subject matter - Mahood details the first six months of a year as he attempts to celebrate off-the-wall holidays each and every day - or what...but this is my least favorite Mahood book. Sorry, George.  It was an interesting premise that grew a little tedious. As an example of holidays, we're talking about No Housework Day, National Beer Day, Caramel Popcorn Day, Nutella Day, etc. He writes, "Fruitcake Toss Day is a strange day. The idea is that you can finally get rid of that fruitcak...

Simply Irresistible Chocolate Éclairs #FoodNFlix

This month the Food'N' Flix crew is watching   Simply Irresistible*  with Wendy of   A Day in the Life on the Farm   leading the discussion. You can read her   invitation post . And, if you care to join us, it's still early in the month. You have time! I'll be honest, I have never heard of this film. But I am always game for a movie suggestion from my friend Wendy. Simply Irresistible  was released in the late 1990s and has elements of a rom-com as well as foodie mysticism. Last month, we watched The Holiday and one of the characters introduced the concept of a meet-cute. Well, this movie kicks off with a rather unlikely, yet still endearing, meet-cute. Amanda Shelton (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) owns The Southern Cross, a restaurant that she inherited from her mother and is trying to keep it alive. She is at the farmers' market and chases a runaway crab up the pant leg of a man who is about to open a high-end restaurant. As I said: meet-cute! She expl...

Sourdough Banana Bread #BakingBloggers

This month, Sue of  Palatable Pastime  told the Baking Bloggers that for June: "We are baking with bananas this month- both  sweet and savory. Let your creative juices flow! I will also accept recipes that include bananas on top of a baked good. So banana ice cream and things of that nature are a go on top of something like a dessert. Even something like banana chips mixed into a baked granola. Just as long as some part of the recipe is baked. ;)" Here's the #BakingBloggers banana-infused baking party. Deconstructed Banana Mousse Pies + Playing with Our LEGO Banana Manns #FoodNFlix

Welcome to March 2019 edition of  Food'N'Flix . And this month, Kelley at  Simply Inspired Meals is hosting is hosting. You can read  her invitation , but she's invited us to watch  The LEGO Movie or The LEGO Movie 2.*  Let's start with this: my boys are LEGO fiends and have been for years. When they were smaller, we took them to the annual Bricks by the Bay event about an hour north of us. And we always left there with lots and lots of specialty LEGO bricks that they couldn't find anywhere else. One year, when we took some friends, the girls and I bought matching LEGO rings and LEGO barrettes. I dug mine out of my jewelry drawer while we watched this movie. Once while R was busy at a school event out of town, D and I popped over to the LEGO store at the mall in that city, while we waited, and he happily hand-picked colors and shapes that he didn't have at home. And even though LEGOLAND® Billund Resort in Denmark was closed for the ...

Bacalao con Plátano Verde (Cod with Green Plantain Crust) #FantasticalFoodFight

I love the Fantastical Food Fight coordinated by Sarah of  Fantastical Sharing of Recipes . For more information about the event, click  here . This month, she chose the theme: bananas! She wrote, " The 21st of September is the International Banana Festival (which takes place in Fulton, KY and South Fulton, TN). Your recipe must contain bananas. It can be sweet, savory, or anything in between." Because my inspiration can be a little out there, I emailed her to ask if she considered a plantain a banana...and if she would allow banana flour and/or banana leaves. She agreed to all of that. In the end, I opted to create my recipe with plantains and banana leaves. My adventure with the banana flour will come later. The boys were really disappointed that I wasn't going to make a Banana Cream Pie , but I reminded them that it had to be a  new-to-the-blog recipe. I did promise to make them a pie soon though. An InLinkz Link-up Ingredients makes 4 to 6 s...

Cavendish Cream Pie #FoodieReads

As March nears its end, I am logging my first selection for the month. It's not that I haven't been reading, it's just that most of my books this month didn't have a foodie element. I know, that's almost unheard of for me. So, I'm trying to do some catching up in the  Foodie Reads Challenge  while we're on Spring Break. I grabbed my copy of  Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World  by Dan Koeppel* and, while Jake stayed in the house, I took the boys to the pool and breezed through the second half of the book. I had just started it in the morning. On the Page... Bananas are not my favorite fruit, but I'm always interested to learn more about a food's history and biology. After reading this book, I know more about the banana than I ever imagined knowing. Who knew how politically charged the banana industry was?!? A few fun facts that I just learned: the banana tree is actually the world's largest herb; most of us ...
