I love the Fantastical Food Fight coordinated by Sarah of  Fantastical Sharing of Recipes . For more information about the event, click  here . I haven't been very good at participating every month, but as this is the final installment, I knew I had to jump in .   Sarah shared: "I begin my Masters program in February and need to try and give it my undivided attention and decided that February's Red Velvet Food Fight will be the final food fight. I feel like we just started but we've been food fighting since November 2016. Isn't that crazy?! Thank you all for joining in and sharing recipes each month! It has been such a fun journey!"  So, I started planning, even though Red Velvet is sort of my Moby Dick. Let me explain. But first, here's the #FantasticalFoodFight final line-up... I haven't been very good at participating, but for 2020, I am going to try to be better!  Our theme for the month is: omelets.   Sarah wrote: "January is National Egg Month and I thought omelets would be an easy recipe for after the holidays (for those who celebrate)/winter break (for those with kids in school in the US)!" Here's the line-up of omelets for the #FantasticalFoodFight bloggers... You are invited to the Inlinkz link party! Click here to enter Japanese Home Cooking I have always liked the sweet-savory of this Japanese rolled omelet. And I decided to give it a try and pulled my copy of  Mastering the Art of Japanese Home Cooking  by Masahuru Morimoto* off the bookshelf. Oddly, I do not think that I've ever written about this book. So, I'm adding in a brief bit...

I haven't been very good at participating, but this month, I couldn't resist.  Our theme for the month is: burgers.   What delicious, carnivorous fun! Sarah wrote: "Your recipe must be a BURGER (theme) recipe. It does not have to be beef - any protein is fine...even black beans! Let your imagination run wild." The Burger Bar Inlinkz Link Party Since she said to let my imagination run wild, I was immediately thinking of some burger form of a low country seafood boil, as I had been rewatching some Mind of a Chef  episodes with Chef Sean Brock. But I couldn't really  figure that one out.  We love burgers and I've posted several quirky versions. Check out my Mimolette Burgers with Malbec Onions ;  I've played with lots of different flavor combinations recently, including what ...

Turrón de Jijona #FantasticalFoodFight

I love the Fantastical Food Fight coordinated by Sarah of  Fantastical Sharing of Recipes . For more information about the event, click  here . This month, she challenged us to make candy! She posted: " Our theme for the month is: CANDY. Your recipe must be a CANDY recipe. This can be hard candy, fudge, toffee, truffles, taffy, etc." I sent her a quick note back, "Just wanted to confirm this is for MAKING candy, not using already made candy, right?" Correct . Okay. Thinking cap on! I'm not a big candy fan. But I have made fudge and truffles; though I guess I'm wrong in not considering them candy. That train of thought took me to Italian Torrone and I remembered that friends had brought me some honey from Spain this summer. I have always wanted to try to make  Turrón . I found two versions - Turrón de Navidad and  Turrón de Jijona - and loved the idea of a soft nougat. That would be the latter. The honeys they gave me were Tomillo (th...

If you've followed me through any holiday season, you know my family is a little gingerbread crazy. I mean just look at my husband's gingerbread house! Yes, those are lights inside. Me? I have a gingerbread scarf that comes out this time every year... The boys always help with some version of gingerbread cookies. One year D made Chewbacca Gingies for his Secret Santa buddy. R helped me decorate the Krampus Gingerbread Minions . I already have two new gingerbread recipes in the works, including Gingernuts, inspired by BBC's Sherlock , and a Gingerbread Layer Cake with Bourbon Frosting that will be on the table for one of my best friend's birthdays this weekend. But the one gingerbread recipe that makes an appearance every single year, however, is Gingerbr...
