Wine Pairing Weekend - #winePW - happens on the second Saturday of the month. And this month - April 2017 - Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm is hosting.
She invited us to share our old standbys. She wrote: "What is your favorite go to bottle? The one you drink with dinner regularly or always make sure you have on hand in case guests drop in? Perhaps your old standby is the wine you like to take as a hostess gift when you are invited over. You know, that bottle that you are sure is going to please without breaking the bank. I, personally, cannot wait to get some ideas for affordable, everyday wines." Me, too!

In My Glass...
I can admit this: though I've purchased bottles and bottles of this wine over the years, I never knew which vineyard made it. Till now. Really! I know it's silly, but we just call it 'OZV.' You can see why.
I knew it was from Lodi. I knew it's always a hit. I knew that it was a Zinfandel. And, best yet, I knew I could get a bottle for less than $15. In fact, I picked up a few bottles this week at Whole Foods at $10.49. Yep. This wine cost me less than $12. And it's good! Oh, and it's made by Oak Ridge Winery...I know that's not clear from the label.

Zinfandel is downright delicious, food friendly, and hugely versatile. This one is particularly sleek and sexy. The back label describes the wine as robust, delicious, and jammy. It is all that. When I poured it this week, Jake commented, "I like this wine." Then he turned the bottle and said, "Oh, this one is an old favorite." Indeed.
OZV is a bottle that we almost always have on hand. It's one I'm comfortable bringing to friends' houses, knowing that it's a crowd pleaser. And it's one that I uncork for pizza night as well as for a more elaborate dinner party.
In fact, the night I uncorked this bottle in preparation for WinePW, I didn't cook at all. D and I were late coming home from our annual eye exams and my eyes were dilated; I managed to heat up leftover paella. I still need to write down that recipe, but my soccarat was a success!

Yum! I'm putting that bottle on my shopping list the next time I go to Whole Foods.
ReplyDeleteI am going to be on the lookout for this wine. The nearest Whole Foods market is over an hour drive from here but I will check out a couple of closer stores for it.
ReplyDeleteI have seen this bottle in many wine shops but actually have never tried and as with you, have never known the producer. I don't think it matters much since I think this is a quite a big seller whether people know who makes it or not. :o)
ReplyDeleteI'll try this zin...I've not had it before, but if it's as tasty as you describe, it will be wonderful! Cheers!
