Seeded Ooomami Bagels #GirlCarnivore

I was reminded that I haven't made bagels in a long time. So, I decided to remedy that this weekend! And I was inspired by this new spice blend from Spiceology that was on my shelf: Ooomami ! How did I not know that someone in my food writing circle was behind this collaboration?! Girl Carnivore is Kita Roberts; and she is the force behind the annual #BurgerMonth event. I've participated for a half a decade or so.  Burger Month is such a fun, carnivorous parade of burger creations. But this post is about bagels...and umami. The spice blend - ooomami - is a play on the word umami. If you ask someone what the basic tastes are, and they are of a certain age, they'll reply: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. They might even be able to show you, on their tongue, where the flavor receptors for those flavors are. But in the 1980s a fifth taste group was recognized: umami which translates to something along the links of savory or meaty. It's a flavor that is present in foods th...

'Where the Crawdads Zing' Seafood Boil #BlendsBash #Sponsored

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the Book Club Cookbook . I received complimentary product for the purpose of review and recipe development, but all opinions are honest and they are my own.  This page may contain affiliate links.   Several weeks ago, my contact at  The Book Club Cookbook  emailed, offering me a few  new spice blends  to participate in their 2021 #BlendsBash.  You betcha!  So, I planned to share a series of recipes. The first I posted was my Chai a Little Tenderness Autumn Muffins recipe. This is the second recipe. Stay tuned for the others. Where the Crawdads Zing  is a blend that was described as a 'Gulf Coast Bay Seasoning'. Comprised of a mixture of celery seed, sea salt, cayenne pepper, yellow mustard powder, thyme, paprika, black pepper, ginger, and bay, I figured I would use it as I would use Old Bay. And - in a moment of serendipity - my mom requested a seafood boil for her birthday dinner. Done! In...

This is the first. Stay tuned for the others. Ingredients  makes a dozen muffins The Chai a Little Tenderness blends cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, rose petals, and mint. It's a more alluring version of a pumpkin pie spice with those last three ingredients. I decided to use it in some autumn muffins made with homemade applesauce. Or you can swap out the applesauce for pumpkin puree. This muffin is a great way to feature your favorite Fall fruit. ½  cup organi...

DIY Taco Seasoning #CulinaryCam

This page contains affiliate links , h owever, all opinions expressed here are my own. I love to make my own spice blends for a couple of reasons. First, I can blend just what I need for a few dishes so the spice blends stay fresh. Second, because I am making the blend, I control what's in it. There are no fillers, sugars, or salts. I recently posted the process on our  CulinaryCam YouTube channel ; I started with my DIY Taco Seasoning. Click to watch the video  here ! I love getting my spices from Thrive Market because they are organic, non-GMO. And because it's their own label, the prices are very affordable!  From time to time, I will point out products or services that I use and recommend. And I will link them in the video description. Just so you know, we may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. Using the links don’t cost you anything extra, but it does help to give us a little bit of money so we can continue t...

Earlier this year, my contact at  The Book Club Cookbook  emailed, offering me a few  new spice blends  to participate in their 2020 #BlendsBash.  You betcha!  So, I planned to share a series of three recipes. First, I shared a recipe using their smoked tea rub; you can see that in my  The Secret Life of Teas Braised Duck Legs . Second, I posted One Hundred Beers of Solitude-Crusted Lingcod . And, today, for my final recipe, I used the The Lord of the Wings blend which is comprised of ancho chile powder, pasilla negro chile powder, paprika, garlic, onion, and cumin. I read all of the Tolkien books as a child. We love the movies. Fun fact, I wanted to see Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in the the...

Last month I shared a recipe using their smoked tea rub; you can see that in my The Secret Life of Teas Braised Duck Legs . The second blend I picked was One Hundred Beers of Solitude, a play one the novel by Gabriel García Márquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude . I read that in high school, but haven't since. I might have to pick it up again. This blend includes: honey, sea salt, citric acid, lemon, grapefruit, lime juice powder, orange juice powder, orange, black pepper, basil, cascade hops. And it was combination of citrus and hops t...

Really. Its smokiness is one of my favorites. Ingredients serves 4 When I think of lapsang souchong , I always think of duck...and crispy duck skin. I decided to use the spice in a braised duck dish. 4 duck legs 1 large onion, peeled and thickly sli...
